The Name

The Name

Tangerum (which can also be spelt Tanderrum) is an Aboriginal word from the local people: the Eastern Kulin tribes. The local tribe in this area was the Taungarong. The word Tangerum comes from the ceremony that took place when visiting strangers arrived in an area. It was a formal event ensuring the visitors were recognised and protected during their stay. The hosts gave gifts to the visitors to acknowledge that the visitors could use the resources of the area. The visitors for their part gave allegiance to their hosts and agreed to provide them with access to their own resources. This ceremony is also known as the "Freedom of the Bush".

This was the ceremony that John Batman took part in when he arrived in Port Phillip; however what he understood to be the purchase of the land during the ceremony was really just the local people giving him access to the land.
